Introduction

About

The Gender Climate Tracker seeks to track gender-responsive climate action globally, particularly in relation to the implementation of the United Nations climate policy. The GCT provides easy, on-the-go access to key statistics, policies, and research related to gender and climate for the community of advocates, practitioners, and decision-makers who recognize the interlinkages between gender and climate change, as well as tracks implementation of gender-climate action under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

History

With the implementation of the Paris Agreement in 2015, the global community entered into a crucial phase where governments, UN officials, and civil society organizations alike required tools and technical support to comprehend, track, translate, and intervene in global policy processes. Since its inception, WEDO has been producing these tools, from country scorecards for grassroots leaders to track implementation of Agenda 21, to reviewing and following-up on the Beijing Platform for Action in partnership with the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA), compiling the gender mandates in the UNFCCC, in addition to tracking participation statistics for women on delegations.

In 2016, WEDO launched the Gender Climate Tracker App and website. The platform has been instrumental in highlighting key gender disparities to hold countries accountable and to facilitate policy implementation. The app started out as a central resource of information and has subsequently developed into a hub of information relating to gender mandates within climate policy, the participation of women in climate negotiations, and tracking of gender-specific progress in each country. In addition, the website includes the possibility for experts, decision-makers and individuals to participate by providing content on national level policy and planning work on gender-responsive climate policy, thus strengthening the level of outreach, impact, and support.

Relevance

Although recent global climate policy spaces demonstrate efforts towards gender integration, there is an evident lack of commitment towards further advancement, as well as a lack of ambition regarding the UNFCCC’s Gender Action Plan. The GCT serves as a tool for relevant stakeholders to further understand the gender and climate nexus, its recurring gaps, and how the UNFCCC processes and policies have failed to achieve gender balance and equality. In this way, attention can be effectively diverted into this chasm and actions can be prioritized.

“Successful implementation that leaves no one behind requires gender-disaggregated data to identify the gender gaps and move away from tokenistic implementation of strategies by governments towards gender inclusion and well-being.” - Bridget Burns, WEDO Director.
